The group of spiders known as the mygalomorphs are generally regarded as the more primitive spiders. They have a number of distinguishing features, one of the most obvious of which is the fact that the fangs act in parallel rather than against each other. They are mostly burrowing spiders which are ambush predators and their bodies are typically large and robust.
