First Aid Information: Stonefish and other stinging fish

Many species of fish in Australian waters have spines which inject venom. The principles of first aid described here can be applied to all such envenomations as determined by the nature of the injury.

Immersing the stung area in very warm water may reduce the pain of stonefish envenomation. Pressure-immobilisation first aid not is not recommended, since it may increase the severity of local pain.

Analgesia or topical anaesthetic agents may be required following a sting. Antivenom is required in cases which present with more than mild to moderate local pain or with systemic symptoms.

The wound should be regarded as possibly contaminated, and tetanus prophylaxis should be updated if required. Medical attention should be sought in order to assess the appropriate treatment of the wound.
