A stonefish will lie motionless on the seabed, well camouflaged as a rock and even half buried in sand or mud, waiting for prey. Unfortunately, this crytic behaviour also makes them difficult for humans to avoid stepping on. Even if the person has footwear, any of the thirteen tough spines may penetrate the foot to a considerable depth. The result of stonefish envenomation is immediate and excruciating pain, but a delayed effect may be tissue damage. Stonefish antivenom reduces the pain and the likelihood of tissue damage. | Photo: L. Greisman, AVRU |
