| AVRU Principal Fellow and Emeritus Professor of Tropical Medicine at Oxford University, Professor David Warrell, addressed a meeting of the WHO Health Technologies and Pharmaceuticals Division that aims to increase treatment access for snakebite and rabies victims. This long neglected tropical health issue is something that Professor Warrell and the AVRU team are passionate about. It is driving our joint interest in addressing the problems of snakebite in the Indo-Pacific, particularly the problem of taipan bite in Papua New Guinea. The AVRU agrees with Dr Howard Zucker, the WHO Assistant Director-General for Health Technologies and Pharmaceuticals, who commented at the meeting that "there are effective solutions that could save millions of lives". The WHO is planning a 5-year plan to boost antivenom production capacity as well as improving the delivery of product to remote rural areas. You can read more about the achievements of Professor Warrell and the AVRU work on snakebite in the Indo-Pacific in the "International" section of the AVRU website. |
