Dr Bakhadir (Boris) Atakuziev, a toxinologist from the Uzbekistan Academy of Sciences in Tashkent, was a visiting researcher at the AVRU in 2000. He has worked for many years on the biochemistry and physiology of archnid toxins, especially those of the comb-footed spiders. He has collaborated with Dr Ken Winkel of the AVRU and Drs Graham Nicholson and Andis Graudins in NSW concerning the toxinology of Steatoda or Cupboard spider venoms (closely related to Redback spiders). Bakhadir continues to work in Tashkent, albeit under very difficult circumstances.
