Although uncommon, cases do occur of patients being envenomed by a sea sponge.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Severe pain developing 10 to 30 minutes after contact, maybe persisting for hours
  • Oedema
  • Erythema
  • Recurrent pain, intermittent over a period of days

Treatment

The condition resolves gradually over hours or days. During that time, palliative tratment can be implemented:

  • Oral or topical analgesia as indicated
  • Antihistamines as indicated
