Butterfly Cod (Pterois volitans)

These fish are sometimes kept as aquarium pets, a fact which has contributed to the freqency of injuries attributed to them. When a person is stung, immediate, severe pain is experienced. Other effects include discoloration around the stung area, sweating, nausea and vomiting. These fish have been responsible for deaths in countries other than Australia.
