Very common in Australian coastal waters and often caught by fishermen, flatheads are regarded as good eating. Spines along their back are associated with venom glands and a painful sting may be inflicted when these fish are handled, particularly while recreational fishing, when trying to land them. There are around 30 species of flathead, and the group occurs in seas right around Australia.
