Gopalakrishnakone, P.
P. Gopalakrishnakone (Gopal) is presently Professor in the Anatomy Department at the National University of Singapore. He is also a consultant to the Defence Science Organization in Singapore and Adjunct Senior Research Scientist at the Defence Medical Research Institute. He visited AVRU in early 2004 and is an Honorary Principal Fellow there.
Professor Gopal's research studies includes structure function studies (toxin detection, biosensors, antitoxins and neutralization factors), toxicogenomics and expression studies, drug resistance in Mycobacteria, the pathogenesis of B. Pseudomallei, antimicrobial peptides from venoms and toxins and PLA2 inhibitors as potential drug candidate for inflammatory diseases. The techniques he employs include quantum dots to toxinology, aptamer as a detection tool, computational biology and microarrays and protein chips.
His recent research awards include the Outstanding University Researcher Award from the National University of Singapore (1998); the Outstanding People of the 20th Century (Outstanding Achievement Award) from the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England (1998); Ministerial Citation, NSTB Year 2000 Award in Singapore; Honorary Medal Award from the Ministry of Health in Vietnam (2002) and the Research Excellence Award from the Faculty of Medicine National University of Singapore (2003).
