Doherty, Peter

Professor Peter Doherty is an Australian Nobel Laureate and former Head of the Department of Immunology at St Judes Medical Centre, Memphis, USA. He visited the Australian Venom Research Unit as part of a 1998 visit to the University of Melbourne. Professor Doherty, a trained veterinary scientist (University of Queensland), has been appointed a Professorial Fellow in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Melbourne as part of its Scholar's Program. He won the 1996 Nobel Prize for Medicine for work with Professor R. Zinkernagel of the Basel Institute for Immunology, Switzerland, in which they discovered how the immune system recognized virus-infected cells.
