Win, May Mya
Professor May Mya Win is the Manager of the WHO Snake Bite Control Project in Rangoon, Myanmar. She is a renal physician in her native Myanmar (previously known as Burma). May Mya Win became interested in the treatment and prevention of snakebite because of the large number of patients she was seeing with kidney failure caused by snakebite. She has been involved in education programs aimed at prevention and first aid treatment of snakebite, especially in rural areas, as well as in trials of antivenoms and work aimed at improving antivenom accessibility and treatment for snakebite patients in Myanmar. Professor Win obtained a WHO Fellowship specifically to visit the Australian Venom Research Unit in 1997. Australian Venom Research Unit co-ordinated her subsequent visits to related researchers throughout Australia. The Unit continues to assist Professor Win in her national leadership role in snakebite injury control in Myanmar.
