Abstract

Tropidechis a monotypic genus; description of snake, colour and scale variations; distribution with maps; toxicity of venom in guinea-pigs and mice - more toxic than death adder venom, less so than tiger snake venom, effect in sheep and dogs; strong coagulant action in vitro, contains a potent phospholipase; venom neutralized by tiger snake antivenene; reports of twelve bites - one death; no local reaction save in one (?allergic); two developed no symptoms; only preparalytic symptoms in nine patients -headache, loss of consciousness, vomiting, visual disturbance, sweating, pallor, hypotension, abdominal pain, proteinuria; haemoglobinuria (one only); antivenene given to five patients.
