Abstract

Four fifths of the snakes of Australia are venomous; comments on (red-bellied) black snake, death adder, yellow snake (tiger snake) and brown snake; some observations on the effects of snake bites on dogs and a dingo; a black snake bite led to great drowsiness; blacks say little to fear from the black snake; mention of a fatal tiger snake bite in Sydney in 1858; Clarence River aborigines method of treating snake bite - scarification, suction and forced exercise; for treatment he recommends - ligature, excision and suction.
