Guide to the Snakes of South-East Australia

Around 140 species of land snakes and 32 species of sea snakes have been recorded in Australia. Like spiders, most snakes in Australia are venomous, but only 12 snakes are thought capable of inflicting a lethal bite. The most venomous snakes include the tiger snake, brown snake, death adder, mulga or king brown snake and a few species of sea snake. Some non-venomous snakes found in Australia include pythons, blind snakes and file snakes. Most snakes are shy creatures and will only attack if they are suddenly disturbed or feel threatened. In these circumstances it is best to stay still or back away slowly to give the snake a chance to slither away. Mulga snakes on the other hand, can get very aggressive and will strike repeatedly.
