Advanced Medical Science (AMS) Student Ran is a third year undergraduate medical student (MBBS/B.Med.Sc.) at the University of Melbourne. As a part of his medical degree, he is undertaking a one year research project at the Australian Venom Research Unit (AVRU) under the supervision of Dr. Ken Winkel (AVRU director). His project will investigate the in vitro and in vivo effects of fractionated box jellyfish venom. The study will focus on the venom’s cardiovascular toxicity, believed to be the primary cause of death. Ran's interest in toxicology stems from his passion for zoology, and herpetology in particular, which he has had from a very young age. His past research experience includes carrying out field work for the South Australian Herpetology Group, as a high school volunteer; and a research project looking at the taxonomy of spiders on which he wrote a short thesis, as a part of his International Baccalaureate diploma. |
